Educated and trained as an engineer – a 25-year career – Holbrook changed course in 2002 and made a new career for himself as a fine crafts artist.
The result is an unusual, finely handcrafted group of ‘boxes.’ Holbrook joins and turns different types of wood, welds steel, forges copper, and fuses glass to create his pieces. With signature touches, like a decorative bubble blown into his glass tops or an actual penny forged into his copper bottoms, producing pieces that are stunning, modern, and fun. Adding to the sense of fun are the names Holbrook bestows on each of his pieces, most of which are charmingly related to his grandchildren.
Each piece has a lift off fused glass lid and is felt lined inside for protection. The outside of the box is finished with a hide grade lacquer. Most of Holbrook’s designs are offered for a limited time only, and once retired, are permanently replaced with new designs.
Holbrook works out of his studio in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, and is a member of The Southern Highlands Handcraft Guild, the second oldest such crafts organization in America. Holbrook’s work fosters the Guild’s mission of advocating what is handmade, where quality, individuality, and workmanship are what matter most.
His boxes are functional, sculptural pieces of art, to be enjoyed in the home or office and make unforgettable gifts.
